Just like the air we breath shrimp need quality water to thrive. Shrimp can be sensitive to the water parameters they are placed in and raised in.
Red cherry shrimp and any of the neocaridina shrimp varieties are less demanding than their caridina counterparts. They can handle a wider range of PH, and water hardness. this makes these shrimp ideal for beginners in the shrimp keeping hobby.
Oftentimes you can use your tap water so long as it is dechlorinated and fits within the shrimps broad parameters. If it does not (my own water falls in this category) a reverse osmosis system (RO) might be necessary along with a quality remineralizer for your shrimp.
Removing all the minerals and micro nutrients from the water is not healthy for the shrimp, as they need these to thrive and successfully molt. thats where quality remineralizing products come into play. They provide quality minerals for the shrimp.
I keep my tanks as follows: General Hardness (GH) 6 Karbonate Hardness (KH) 2 (PH) 7.4
My typical TDS is between 200-300 I use RO water that is remineralized.
Reverse osmosis is a water purification process that uses a membrane to remove ions, molecules and larger particles from drinking water. This creates a pure water source which we can add buffers to create water to any specification for our shrimps.
This is done by adding a remineralizer of some sort to the water, these buffers are species specific so you will need a different one for Neocaridina and Caridina and other types of shrimp.
I recommend the Aquatic Life Twist. This unit has worked well for me in my home and provides great water for my tanks. My local water conditions require I use RO water, and I enjoy having the peace of mind that my shrimp are living in the best water conditions possible for them.
I have two particular reminerlaizers I use personally and can recommend.
Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ this product here comes in the form of a powder. So long as you follow the directions on the directions on the container and make sure the product is well mixed you should not have problems adjusting your TDS, GH and KH.
SL Aqua Blue Wizard is the other remineralizer I like to use. i like this particular product because you don't need to age the water like Salty Shrimp, and the dosing of the product is easy in its liquid form. Simply add a pump, mix and the there is an immediate change in the water parameters. Again following proper dosing is key.
